armor bearer

/ ˈɑrmər ˌbɛrər /AR-mur BAIR-ur
n. · national; Pentecostal and Charismatic churches · 1990s
Verified
1.
A church member assigned to serve a pastor or bishop personally: carrying the Bible and robe, keeping water and a towel at hand, standing between the pulpit and the crowd, and covering the leader in prayer. The role is understood as spiritual as much as practical, the bearer taking on the leader's protection as an assignment.
Don't approach the bishop directly, talk to his armor bearer.
Origin & Attribution
Pentecostal and Charismatic churches, spreading nationally through the 1990s. The name is lifted from the biblical attendants who carried a warrior's shield, but the office as churches practice it is modern: it was codified and popularized by Terry Nance's 1990 book God's Armor Bearer, moved through Charismatic broadcast and conference culture, and was absorbed into Black Pentecostal practice — including formalization inside the Church of God in Christ, whose Adjutancy trains the same function under the title adjutant.
