Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 8, 2026.

Black’s Dictionary (“we,” “us”) is a community-run archive of Black American vernacular. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible.

Information we collect

Account information. If you create an account, we collect your email, chosen handle, and display name through our authentication provider (Supabase).

Contributions. Words, definitions, examples, origins, sources, and any audio pronunciations you submit, along with the handle attached to them (submissions may also be made anonymously).

Donations. Payments are processed by Stripe. We receive the amount, whether it recurs, and the email Stripe returns — we never see or store your full card details.

Usage analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics, which is privacy-friendly and does not use cookies or build advertising profiles. We also keep standard server logs.

How we use it

To operate and moderate the archive, credit contributors, process donations, send you relevant notifications, prevent abuse, and improve the site. We do not sell your personal information.

Service providers

We share limited data with the vendors that run the service: Supabase (database, authentication, storage), Stripe (payments), Vercel (hosting and analytics), and an email provider for transactional messages. Each processes data only to provide their service to us.

Social media

We publish our own content to our own accounts on platforms like X and TikTok. This does not access, read, or post to your personal social accounts.

Your choices

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account and associated personal data by contacting us. You can cancel recurring donations at any time. Public contributions may remain in the archive as part of the record, but we will remove personal identifiers on request.

Data retention & security

We keep information for as long as needed to run the archive and meet legal obligations, and we use reasonable safeguards to protect it. No online service is perfectly secure.

Children

The service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.

Changes & contact

We may update this policy; material changes will be reflected by the “last updated” date. Questions or requests: hello@blacksdictionary.com.
