bffr

/ /ˌbiː ˌɛf ˌɛf ˈɑːr/ /BEE-EFF-EFF-ARR (often read aloud as the full phrase)
initialism, interjection · United States · 2020s
Verified
1.
Short for 'be fucking for real.' Said or typed at someone whose claim, excuse, or self-assessment is so detached from reality that it does not deserve a point-by-point answer — the whole premise gets rejected in four letters. It carries exasperation more than anger: the speaker is tired, not shocked.
You said you'd pay me back Friday and now it's 'money's been weird'? Bffr.
Origin & Attribution
The spelled-out phrase belongs to Black American speech, where "be for real" has long done the work of calling out nonsense and the intensifier makes the fatigue explicit. The compressed form has a paper trail on Black Twitter well before the app that got credit for it: Know Your Meme's earliest documented use is a November 11, 2013 tweet reading "be fucking fr." The initialism circulated in Black Twitter reply culture through the late 2010s and into 2021–2022, then jumped platforms in mid-2022 when a soundbite from the rapper Slump6s was remixed into a TikTok sound and the phrase flooded comment sections. At that point the explainer industry — Dexerto, Distractify, parenting glossaries — filed it under "Gen Z slang" and "TikTok slang," scrubbing both the community and the near-decade of prior use. The record contradicts that label: the term is a Black Twitter initialism with documented use going back to 2013, adopted by Gen Z at large only after the 2022 surge.
