Origin & Attribution
Bryson 'Cupid' Bernard of Lafayette, Louisiana, freestyled the song and its steps in the studio in 2006, deliberately building a line dance simple enough that nobody at the function gets left out — the instructions are the lyrics. Released as a single in 2007 after Atlantic Records signed him off its viral spread, it reached No. 66 on the Billboard Hot 100, and in 2007 some 17,000 people in Atlanta shuffled behind Bernard into the Guinness record for largest line dance. The record slotted into a Black line-dance lineage that runs through the Electric Slide era and the Cha Cha Slide: called steps, no partner required, every generation on the floor at once. It has since gone multi-platinum on longevity rather than chart heat, because family functions renew its contract every summer. Louisiana made it; the whole country's wedding DJs collect on it.
