The term was coined in 2006 by Joshua Lumpkin Green, in a thesis on the packaging of the Black masculine image in video games. The meaning now in general use — reaction GIFs and social media — was popularized by the Black writer and scholar Lauren Michele Jackson in Teen Vogue on August 2, 2017. Correct two standing errors: it is not a 2023 cable-news invention, and Jackson popularized rather than coined it. Saying she coined it erases the earlier work.
