Origin & Attribution
Built straightforwardly from dope plus boy, and carried by Black Southern speech through the crack years — Atlanta above all, with the term in the street well before it was in the songs. It moved out to the rest of the country on Atlanta records in the early 2000s and became load-bearing vocabulary for trap. Two corrections. It is not a Clipse coinage and not a Virginia word; the group works the same subject matter, but the term's center of gravity is Atlanta, and lyric corpora put Atlanta far out front on regional usage. And it is not the same word as N.W.A's Dopeman, a Compton compound from 1988 with a separate life.
