Black Los Angeles — South Central, Watts, Compton — out of the LAPD's move to routine air patrol. The department built up its helicopter fleet from the late 1960s, and the Greater Los Angeles Urban Coalition was complaining about helicopters over minority neighborhoods by 1969; the historian Max Felker-Kantor traces the nickname to that period in Policing Los Angeles. The archive has no dated print attestation from those years and does not claim one. The datable receipt is Ice Cube's Ghetto Bird, the third track on Lethal Injection, released by Priority Records on December 7, 1993 — a record that carried the term national.
