In Uptown New Orleans, a young Black man who is active and respected in the street economy — hustling, dealing or robbing — and who shows it in clothes, jewelry and cars. The admiration and the danger come together: he has a reputation, he has the attention of women, and he has the attention of police. The hot is the older Black sense of drawing heat, being known or wanted, not hot meaning attractive.

Black working-class New Orleans, specifically the Magnolia projects (the C. J. Peete development, Third Ward) and the surrounding Uptown wards, in street use before Cash Money Records carried it nationally. Seth Ferranti's Thug Life documents that the four rappers took the name from an existing Magnolia projects street crew that Terrance "Gangsta" Williams was part of — Cash Money did not coin it. The modern national reading of hot as sexy is a back-formation. Hot Girl Summer descends from the group's own 1999 "I Need a Hot Girl," not the other way around.
