Chicago drill, out of the South and West Sides around 2011 to 2013 — the Englewood and Parkway Gardens generation. It moved outward from there into Detroit and Brooklyn drill, then to UK drill, and only afterward into memes, gaming, and general online speech. Three misattributions are common and all are backwards. It is not UK slang: British drill inherited it from Chicago around 2015 to 2017, and Tony Thorne's 2018 drill glossary, though a good dated citation, documents a UK corpus and cannot be read as the origin. It is not TikTok slang or gaming slang; those uses are 2017 and later, downstream of a meme challenge. And the sanitized definition — caught unprepared, caught embarrassed — is the meme sense, not the Chicago one. In Chicago it names being unarmed and unaccompanied where the opps can reach you, and that is what the word is for. The archive does not claim drill coined it: no attestation before 2012 could be found in any source, but absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, and older AAVE use may simply be unrecorded.
