1.
Monday night at the Magic City club in Atlanta, functioning as the city's record-testing floor: a DJ plays something unreleased, and the dancers and the room decide whether it lives.
“He wouldn't put it out till it got a reaction on a Magic City Monday.”
Origin & Attribution
Atlanta, in the Black rap, DJ and dancer economies built around a club that opened in 1985. The Monday institution consolidates through the middle and late 1990s — Atlanta magazine's 2019 oral history credits the late DJ Nando as the originator of Magic City Mondays, and traces the shift to Monday partly to the aftermath of the 1995 arson fire and the competition with a rival club. What makes the night matter is that the verdict is rendered by the room rather than by radio or a label: Jermaine Dupri and Big Boi both describe the floor as the city's real A&R. The plural, Magic City Mondays, is the older insider form; the singular is the one the wider record picked up. Two dates that circulate wrongly: the 2015 documentary is GQ's, directed by Lauren Greenfield, not FADER's, and Jeezy's song Magic City Monday is a 2016 single, not an album cut from 2014.
