Origin & Attribution
A clipping of 'opposition' ('opps' for opposition), it comes out of Chicago drill rap. As reported by Know Your Meme, an early documented use is in Chief Keef's 'John Madden' (YouTube upload of 30 October 2011), followed by Lil Reese's 'Us' (2012). Use stayed largely within drill until around 2016, then spread through national rap and viral social media in the late 2010s and 2020s, where it is often detached from its origin in Chicago's Black youth and drill scene and used as general internet slang.
