patna

/ /ˈpɑt.nə/ /PAHT-nuh
noun · U.S. South (Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Memphis corridor) · 1990s
Verified
1.
A close friend, ally, or partner-in-crime — someone trusted like family. Patna carries the warmth of 'partner' stripped of its business connotation and rebuilt as a term of loyalty: the person who has your back, rides with you, and is named almost like kin. It is most often used between men addressing each other directly ('what's good, patna') or in the plural 'patna dem' to mean one's whole crew or circle of friends.
Me and my patna been rocking since middle school, that's family.
Origin & Attribution
Patna is the Southern Black vernacular pronunciation of 'partner,' produced by the same non-rhotic, final-consonant-dropping speech pattern found across Black speech communities in Louisiana, Texas, and the broader Gulf South. It surfaces heavily in New Orleans bounce and Texas/Houston-Memphis hip-hop of the 1990s, where rappers like Master P and UGK used 'potna' as an ordinary term of address years before it circulated online. Streetslang sites that label it 'internet slang' misattribute a term that was already common oral Black Southern speech well before the word ever reached a screen.
1997
Master P raps 'my potna gave me $50' alongside UGK and 8Ball & MJG on the Meal Ticket track from the I'm Bout It soundtrack.
2000s
Southern rap crews popularize the plural form 'patna dem' (my partner them) to mean one's whole circle, as heard in Rick Kidz's 'Mi Partna Dem.'
2020s
TikTok and street-slang glossary sites pick up 'patna'/'potna' as viral vocabulary, often mislabeling it generic internet slang rather than longstanding Southern Black speech.
