Origin & Attribution
The phrase is commonly traced to outlaw motorcycle culture, but the biker origin is weakly documented, and the loyalty sense now in use took its mainstream shape in late-1990s Black hip-hop. The Bonnie-and-Clyde partner theme was already in rap by 1993, in Yo-Yo's "The Bonnie and Clyde Theme," though the exact phrase there is unconfirmed. The Ruff Ryders label made the spelling "Ryde or Die" a brand, releasing the compilation Ryde or Die Vol. 1 on April 27, 1999, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The Lox followed with "Ryde or Die, Bitch" on We Are the Streets (2000). By the 2010s it had widened into a general loyalty phrase and social-media caption. It did not begin on TikTok or Instagram. Within Black communities the expectation it places on women is also debated as a burden.
