Holcombe Rucker worked as a playground director for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation in Harlem from 1948 to 1964. He started his tournament in 1950 on a court at Seventh Avenue between 128th and 129th Streets, beginning with junior high school players and widening it as it grew. His motto was each one, teach one, and he ran the thing as a scholarship pipeline; roughly seven hundred players are credited with reaching college through it. He finished his own degree at City College of New York in 1962 and taught English at J.H.S. 139. He died of cancer in 1965 at thirty-nine. The park that carries his name opened in 1956 as PS 156 Playground and was renamed for him in 1974 at the request of players he had mentored. The common shorthand that Rucker Park is the tournament reverses the order: the man and the tournament came first, and the name went on the fence nine years after he was buried.
