1.
A performance by Black Greek-letter organizations held outdoors on the campus yard — stepping, strolling, calls and chants, organization colors — put on for the whole campus rather than for a ticket. The aim is to show who the organization is and how long it has been here.
“Whole campus came out to the yard show and stayed till the last chapter strolled.”
Origin & Attribution
HBCU campuses, through the nine organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, and now carried to predominantly white campuses wherever NPHC chapters exist. The practice reaches back to Howard University, where Omega Psi Phi was founded in 1911 and Phi Beta Sigma in 1914, and where informal yard performance became organized public performance over the following decades. The phrase itself is documented in campus press and official university event listings — the Niner Times covered UNC Charlotte's annual NPHC Yard Show on September 2, 2025, and the Grand Valley Lanthorn and the Bradley Scout have covered their own. The archive can date the practice deep and the phrase only shallow, and says so rather than splitting the difference.
